Slow eating is particularly important for dogs who are guzzlers and swallow their food too quickly, as this can bring about a dangerous condition called Gastric Dilation and Volvulus (GDV). Certain breeds are particularly susceptible to GDV, including deep-chested large breed dogs such as German Shepherds, Great Danes, Labradors, Weimeraners, Irish Setters, Akitas, and Boxers.
